Ask five people what they think about AI in customer service, and you'll get five different answers, usually somewhere between "it's going to replace every agent" and "it's a gimmick customers hate".
Neither is true. Here's what holds up once the hype settles.
Myth 1: AI is going to replace your team
For a big company, one AI that works well doesn't replace people. It takes on the routine, repetitive conversations: answering common questions, booking and rescheduling appointments, and picking up calls out of hours.missed call barely registers. For a small business, it's often a customer who won't ring back.
That leaves your team free for the conversations that need a person. And if they're working face to face with customers, they can give the people in front of them their full attention.
During peak service periods, balancing guest interaction with answering incoming calls became extremely challenging. Prioritising excellent customer service on the restaurant floor often meant calls could not be answered promptly.

Myth 2: Customers can tell, and they hate it
Customers don't reject AI on principle. They reject AI that's slow, robotic or stuck the moment a question goes off script.
When it's quick, accurate and upfront about what it is, most people care far more about getting an answer than about who, or what, gave it to them.
Myth 3: You need a big tech team to set it up
That was true a few years ago. Most AI customer service tools today are built to be up and running in days, not months, with no developers needed on your side.
Myth 4: AI can't handle nuance or emotion
Today's tools don't just process words. They read tone too
Sentiment analysis can spot a frustrated or upset customer as it happens and pass them to a person before the conversation goes wrong. The nuance isn't ignored. It's what triggers the handover.
Myth 5: It's only for businesses with big budgets
AI customer service used to be something only large companies could afford. That's no longer the case.
Small and medium-sized businesses are now some of the fastest to take it up, because they can't justify a 24/7 team the way a larger company might.
So, what works?
The setups that succeed have three things in common:
